Before using the vocabulary, what one has to do is to try to understand, and, to this end, to get oneself into a position in which things fall into place. At the clinical consultation on Friday, I gave you advance notice of the reading of an important text, and I am going to try to keep to my promise. Right at the heart of the collection of these so-called technical papers, there is a text which is called 'The dynamics of transference'. Like all the texts in this collection, one cannot say that we have cause to be entirely satisfied with its translation.
The value of the object may beapurely tactical one and may perhaps emerge only in this one battle. It is within the movement in which the subject acknowledges himself that a phenomenon which is resistance appears. When this resistance becomes too great, the transference emerges. It's true that the text doesn't say a transference-phenomenon. If Freud had wanted to say a transference-phenomenon appears, he would have done so. The proof of this distinction's significance is to be found at the end of the article.
That's not at all what the ego is in Freud's work. It has a functional role, linked to technical necessities. The triumvirate who work in New York, Hartmann, Loewenstein and Kris, in its current attempt to elaborate a psychology of the ego, is always asking itself - what was Freud trying to get at in his last theory of the ego?
